Applied ICT - a local speciality
Turku region is known for its abundance of specialised knowledge and know-how in applied information and communication technology (ICT). Applied ICT is utilised particularly in social affairs and health care, the maritime and metal industries - especially those connected with STX Europe, and the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Other strong areas include electronics, digital media, and speech and language technology.
Nokia - the region's biggest employer
Nokia, the world’s leading manufacturer of mobile devices, is the biggest ICT employer within Turku region. Nokia has numerous R & D facilities, as well as an assembly plant for its most expensive mobile phones, in Turku region. Altogether, the ICT field accounts for some 1,400 companies and 13,000 jobs in Turku region.
Turku Centre for Computer Science
The ICT field in Turku region co-operates closely with local universities and research institutes. One such source of innovation and expertise in this field is the Turku Centre for Computer Science (TUCS), which coordinates research and education in ICT. TUCS is a joint co-operation between the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University and the Turku School of Economics. There are some 35 professors, 65 Ph.D. level researchers, 100 doctoral students and 2000 Master's students actively involved in participation with TUCS.
